Captain John Gaber and his trusty fishing boat, “Take Down,” take guests for fishing charters along the Hecate Strait for some of the best salmon and halibut fishing off British Columbia’s coastal waters. John’s 25 years of experience, friendly personality and knowledge of where to find the most populated fishing areas, make him one of Prince Rupert’s fishing guides.

John and his wife started Daybreak Fishing Charters 10 years ago as a way to extend their passion for sport fishing and instruct others on how to do the same. John has plenty of patience for those new to the sport — after all, patience is an essential virtue, especially when it comes to fishing! To ensure everyone has a great time, we can also supply water, fishing gear, bait and rain gear to guests that didn’t bring their own.

Our Fishing Boat, “Take Down”
“Take Down” is a 24-foot, 2006 Campion Explorer 682 fibreglass fishing boat that is powered by a brand new, 250-horsepower, four-stroke Yamaha outboard motor. “Take Down” cruises at a steady 35 knots. This means more time for fishing! For trolling, “Take Down” is equipped with a brand new, 9.9-horsepower, four-stroke Yamaha kicker motor. These quiet, dependable engines ensure a successful day out on the water.

When it comes to handling the waters off the Pacific Northwest, “Take Down” is truly a state-of-the-art vessel. She features the latest instruments and has been approved by the Coast Guard and Transport Canada, ensuring the safety and comfort of our guests. To help you stay safe and be successful out on the waters, we are also equipped with a Standard Horizon GPS chart plotter, VHF marine radio, Motorola cell phone, Scotty® electric downriggers, life preservers, Shimano rods, as well as Penn® level wind reels. We also have mooching or “knuckle buster” reels for our more adventurous and experienced anglers.

Helping the Métis Community

For the past two years, we have been giving away full-day fishing trips to support the BC Métis Federation, an organization whose aim is to ensure the wellbeing of those in Métis communities. During these outings, we have also supplied a gourmet lunch.
